What are the key ingredients of the Melanopro Peel?
Dermalogica has carefully selected key ingredients to optimize pigmentation removal, whilst mimicking the downtime associated with traditional peels. Ingredients are-
Azelaic Acid acts as a tyrosinase inhibitor, reducing melanin production while gently exfoliating the skin to speed up cell turnover and remove dull surface layers.
Tranexamic Acid, derived from amino acids, effectively reduces hyperpigmentation by inhibiting an enzyme crucial to melanin production, promoting a more uniform complexion.
Salicylic Acid (SA), or Beta Hydroxy Acid (BHA), penetrates the skin’s lipid barrier, loosening the bonds between cells to encourage the shedding of dead skin, resulting in smoother, more even-toned skin.
Glycolic and Lactic Acids, both AHAs, disrupt the cohesion between skin cells to exfoliate the outer layers and also provide moisturizing benefits.
Retinol, a potent form of Vitamin A, enhances cell turnover and reduces melanin synthesis, leading to a brighter, more even skin tone.
Niacinamide, also known as Vitamin B3, prevents melanin from reaching the skin’s surface by inhibiting the transfer of melanin-containing melanosomes to keratinocytes, reducing dark spots and uneven tone.
Acetyl Hexapeptide-1, a depigmenting peptide, decreases melanin production and transfer, contributing to a more even complexion.
What are the side effects of Cosmelan?
Side effects are different from expected effects (peeling & recovery of about one week). Rarely side effects can occur & include-
- Allergies to active ingredients of Cosmelan
- Melasma rebound
- Prolonged redness & itching
- Textural changes post peeling
- Blotchy skin
How does the MelanoPro compare with Cosmelan peels?
Cosmelan & Dermamelan peels have significant downtime, namely 7 to 14 days. These peels work faster & at the expense of prolonged skin inflammation & irritation.
In contrast the Melanopro peel has only 2-3 days of mild peeling with little to no downtime.

Can the Melanopro Peel be customized to different skin types?
MelanoPro peels are suitable for all skin types & can be customized for sensitive skin.
- Skin type 1,2 (European, Caucasian): peel time 7 hours
- Skin type 3,4 (Asia, Middle Eastern): peel time 6 hours
- Skin type 5,6 (Indian, African): peel time 5 hours

It’s best to remove and rinse peel with cold or lukewarm water. Do not rub with a towel. Use hands to remove, making light fingertip circles on wet skin. This will remove the peel. Avoid any heavy friction, as skin may become more sensitive.
Can I use my other skin care during the Melanopro peel process?
The blanket answer is NO, however if you have insight, your clinician will guide you as to how to incorporate specific pigment correctors with Melanopro. This is an advanced cycling technique that may be discussed with some individuals during the consultation.
Disclaimer: If you are just starting out & do not understand your skin’s threshold, Dermalogica recommends that you stick with the Melanopro system protocol. Adding other skin care ingredients will probably compromise your results.

A SummaryDavin’s tip on selecting peels for pigmentation & melasma
Dr Davin Lim, Dermatologist | Sydney
How should a melasma patient select the best peel for melasma? It’s confusing as there is a plethora of peel choices, ranging from superficial to deep peels, provided by many brands. Selecting the best chemical peel for melasma requires careful consideration of skin type, the depth of pigmentation, and the potential risks associated with post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation (PIH). Here are key factors to keep in mind:
Skin Type: Patients with darker skin tones (Fitzpatrick skin types III-VI) are more prone to PIH, so mild peels such as glycolic acid/lactic acid or novel Vi Precision Peels / Melanopro peels are recommended over more aggressive options such as TCA or phenol peels (Discussed below).
Peel Depth: Superficial peels are generally safer for treating melasma. Glycolic acid (20-70%) and salicylic acid peels are commonly used as they target the epidermis, reducing the risk of complications. Cosmelan, Dermamelan, retinoic acid, Vi Precision Plus & Melanopro are also examples of superficial peels.
Downtime: if you have a spare 2 weeks, certainly Cosmelan can be considered. Most melasma patients have limited recovery time, peels such as the Melanopro system or the Vi Precision Plus are better options.
Pigment depth & contrast: this determines the effectiveness of the peel. High contrast melasma responds better. Deep dermal melasma will not respond to superficial peels.
Here are my thoughts on the Melanopro system by Dermatologica;
- This system is very easy to use & is cost effective.
- It provides an improvement in skin quality in most individuals, regardless of pigmentation. Skin will feel smoother, look brighter, & exhibit variable reduction of very fine lines/wrinkles & in some cases, pores will look smaller. I do think that this is one of the best products for an overall skin rejuvenation effect. IMO I rate this as better than everything else I have used, including prescription retinoids, even beating laser assisted retinoid delivery. That’s a big call, I know.
- It provides variable reduction in pigmentation, mainly superficial forms of pigment, including sun damage, freckles & melasma. Remember, Melanopro is non-prescriptive.
- Melanopro is a good way of maintaining skin quality & results after pico lasers & novel peels.
- It can be useful as a primary melasma treatment in individuals that do not have downtime. In our practice we employ Melanopro as an at home maintenance skin care routine in patients with stable melasma & other forms of pigmentation.
