Our dermatologist does not offer ‘packages’ as treatments are individualized. 

Medicare does not cover treatments for pigmentation. Conditions such as melasma, Hori, post inflammatory hyperpigmentation, as well as age & sun-induced pigment are all classed as cosmetic in nature. The same applies to conditions such as Ashy dermatosis, Rhiel’s melanosis & other causes of pigment. 

Pigment conditions that carry a Medicare rebate include Ota naevi, CALM birthmarks. A partial rebate for the consultation & follow up applies if you have a valid referral to see a dermatologist. 

We aim to have a pigment clinic within a public hospital in 2026 – 2027 run primarily by dermatology trainees with oversight by our dermatologists. This will be a free service, with treatments conducted on a research basis. This service prioritizes rare causes of pigmentation with the sole purpose of teaching junior dermatologists.  

Occasionally we run clinical trials for new peels, lasers, & topical creams for the treatment of melasma & pigmentation. This is a free service aimed at scientific research. Clinical trials entails that you may be given a placebo (treatment that is controlled with no real efficacy). If you qualify for clinical trials, we will place you on a wait list.

Experience & equipment. We use the very latest equipment for the treatment of melasma, including Picosure Pro & Picoway, however this is only the start. We write the protocols that are used by other clinics. 

Our clinicians have over 20 years experience in the field of dermatology, with training in Asia, the US & Australia. Not only do we treat pigment, we train other clinics how to treat pigment. 

We have a slow-flow policy, meaning we only see 2 new cases of pigment a day, ensuring top tier clinical management of every patient. 

90% of patients with melasma don’t get to first base, namely getting sunscreen application correct. If cost is an issue, start here. It is THE MOST COST EFFECTIVE start to your melasma treatment program. 

Melasma maintenance treatments: as melasma is a medical condition, recurrence is not infrequent. Some patients achieve long term remission with treatments, others have recurrence within months to years. Maintenance treatments are more cost effective compared to pigment removal treatments & range between $490 to $890 per session, depending on who performs the procedure. 

Resistant melasma: is hard to manage, hence this job is taken up by our dermatologist. About 15% of melasma cases are resistant. Of this 15%, approximately 70% can be effectively treated by Dr Davin Lim, acknowledging a failure rate of 30% (for resistant cases). 

Treatments by a dermatologist adds to the cost of treatment, ranging from $890- $1690 per session depending on the combination used. Factor in 3-7 sessions & the costs add up. 

Dermal melasma: is notoriously difficult to manage. Similar to resistant melasma, a dermatologist is often involved in treatment, reflected in the fees. Factor in treatments such as dermal or cellular remodeling coupled with pico lasers & novel peels over a period of 5 to 12 months. 

Cellular remodeling increases the remission rate of melasma: Not many patients get it. Here are the facts – melasma pigment is a reaction in some but not all cases. Pigment is secondary to getting old (or older), this is termed cellular senescence. 

By treating age related changes in the dermal layers of skin, we treat one of the causes of melasma. Cellular remodeling employs injectables, lasers, energy based devices & skin care. It is an ongoing process, with results seen at 12 to 24 months. Factor in-

• Injectables: such as collagen stimulating fillers, Rejuran. From $690 per session.

Skin lightening is not cheap, so think carefully. In most cases we can lighten skin by one to two shades, however it will take 5-10 sessions for maximal results. Remission rates are variable.

Skin lightening is performed by our physician & dermal therapist, if a dermatologist is involved, a loading of + 80% is added to the fee. 

Dark circles are complex & the treatment price depends on the cause of dark circles. At The Melasma Clinic we don’t follow a cookie cutter model of one size fits all, we tailor all our treatments. We employ a combination of vascular & pigment lasers together with novel peels, & injectables to effectively treat most forms of dark under eye circles.

A dermatologist is involved in complex cases of dark circles. Specialist fees apply.

Dark underarms can respond to pico lasers, however the results are not predictable. The most frequent cause of underarm darkening is acanthosis nigricans. This condition is ideally managed by a medical dermatologist or endocrinologist. 

Lasers may offer some degree of fading. A series of 3-5 sessions are recommended, spaced 4-8 weeks apart. Cost ranges from $790 to $1190, depending on who performs the procedure. 

Pico lasers are effective in 30-50% of cases.

Freckles respond nicely to pico lasers as well as chemical peels. Expect to improve by 40 to 90% with one session, depending on your skin type. 

Pico laser: $990 to $1690 per session, factor in 1-3 sessions

Chemical peel: $990 to $1390 per session, factor in 1-3 peels. 

Pico lasers are far more effective compared to novel chemical peels when it comes to freckle treatment.

Hori treatment involves the latest picosecond lasers. They require 4-8 sessions spaced 4 to 10 weeks apart for best results.

Some cases of Hori occur with melasma pigment, hence treatment of the melasma area may involve an additional nominal charge of $190. Hori treatments are performed by our physician & dermatologist. The range of prices reflects who performs the procedure of Hori removal. 

*Resistant cases of Hori may require 7-14 sessions of laser. 

**Complex pigmentation is treated by our dermatologist. 

Age spots are best treated with lasers. Depending on the depth of pigmentation, 1-3 sessions are required. 

Prices range from $790 to $2490 depending on the number of age spots & who performs the procedure. Pico lasers are used in darker skin types, whilst nano lasers are used in lighter skin types. 

*We can perform single age spot removal, however there is a minimum charge of $790.

Not all moles can be removed with lasers. Mole removal is at the discretion of the dermatologist. As a guide- 

• Laser removal single mole; $1290
• Laser removal 2-3 moles; $1990
• Laser removal 3-6 moles; $2790

*Recurrence & partial removal of moles are not uncommon. 

**Definitive treatment is via excision by a skin cancer doctor (if you want it cheap) or plastic surgeon (if you want it neat). Our dermatologist is only involved in complex-extensive congenital naevi or challenging cases. 

Ota naevi treatments are partially covered by Medicare. As a guide, lasers cost between $890 to $1190 out of pocket. Up to 6 sessions are subsidized by Medicare per 12 months. 

Depending on surface area, 4-8 sessions are required for best results. Ota treatments are performed by Dr Davin Lim using pico lasers. 

Iron infusion stains due to transfusions are common. They can respond to pico lasers, however the outcomes are unpredictable. As a guide-

• Test spot pico laser: $1390, factor in 2 sessions. 
• Treatment pico laser: $2990, factor in 5-10 sessions over 6 to 18 months. 

Most cases of iron infusion staining are paid for by insurance claims or by the clinic who caused the accident. Medico Legal cases are seen by our dermatologist. 

Perioral pigment around the mouth can respond to pico lasers. A series of 2-5 sessions are required for optimal results. Genetic causes require more sessions.

• Pico pack for perioral pigmentation $2500 for 5 sessions

Lasers are effective in up to 50-80% of cases. Genetic causes of pigmentation have a lower success rate.

Ashy dermatosis treatments start from $690 per session, as performed by our cosmetic physician, or $990 by our dermatologist.  As a guide, 3-6 sessions are required for clinical outcomes. The chances of success is about 50%, hence think carefully about embarking on lasers. 

* Ashy, ideally required joint medical management for monitoring of isotretinoin therapy. 

Creams range between $95 to $140, depending on the formulation. We endeavor to keep the price as low as possible as we are a service provider, not a retailer. We’re here to solve a problem, not sell you skin care. 

We will discuss who performs your treatment during the consultation process. Our aim is to give you the most cost effective treatment without compromising your outcomes. 

Treatments by our dermatologist carry a higher fee.

Dr Davin Lim is a procedural dermatologist, who employs lasers, injects, cuts & performs complex chemical peels. He does not provide medical therapy as this lies beyond his interests, acknowledging that in some cases of pigmentation, medical therapy is first line. 

If your case requires medical management, namely prescriptive medication & or investigations, you will be referred to a medical dermatologist for joint management. Examples of pigmentation that will benefit from joint care include-

• Dark underarms. Conditions such as acanthosis nigricans are best managed by endocrinologists, GPs & medical dermatologists. 
• Some cases of perioral or mouth pigmentation may require allergy testing. 
• Ashy dermatosis requires medical management by a medical dermatologist. 
• Post inflammatory hyperpigmentation requires medical management if you still have active acne. 

All our treatments are based upon the science of treating pigment, this means there are success & failure rates. These rates are based upon what is reflected in the scientific literature, namely how we employ lasers, novel peels, topical skin care & medication to address pigmentation. 

For melasma pigmentation, our success rate is around 85%, which is one of the highest anywhere in the world. The downside? 15% fail to respond to combination therapy. Patients (not clients) are consented to this fact, & no guarantee is made. 

This clinic is, as the name suggests, is a clinic. It is not a ‘spa’ or an aesthetic-cosmetic center. We apply peer reviewed scientific data to your pigment. We treat based upon science & medicine. We exist to solve a problem based upon statistical data. We are not here to sell you packages. 

Refunds are not offered for treatments that do not ‘work’, much like you don’t get a refund from your GP if he fails to correct your blood pressure, nor your back surgeon if your pain still exists. 

For most conditions we will give you a crystal clear indication of the chances of success, based on a percentage. From there, you make an informed decision based upon  the information we give you as to whether you would like to initiate treatments. Rest assured, our aim is to give you the highest chances of achieving your skin goals.
