What is the science behind The Cosmelan Series?
It treats the cause of melasma, targeting specific pathways that includes-
- Pigmentation production.
- Pigment transfer to skin cells.
- Accelerates pigment removal by increasing cell turnover.
In contrast, chemical peels with glycolic, lactic, salicylic & Jessner only removes pigment, but does not address pigment production.
What is involved with The Cosmelan Series?
The Cosmelan Series is divided into 3 phases.
Phase 1: In clinic peel application. Following a deep cleanse, Cosmelan 1 is applied to the face. This painless procedure takes 15 minutes to perform. Phase 1 ends by washing off the peel 8-12 hours after application (we will guide you as to the exact timing).
Phase 2: Starts 48 hours after phase 1. This home routine incorporates Cosmelan 2 & Hydra Vital Factor K application. The kit has enough product to last 3 months.
Phase 3: LED Healite sessions are performed at the end of week 1 & 2. This treatment reduces inflammation due to phase 1 peeling. Treatments are optional, as it has no impact on pigment production or results.
How long is the recovery time?
The rate limiting factor for This Series is the recovery time. This ranges from 7 days, all the way to 14 days or more depending on your skin sensitivity. During this time you can not wear makeup.
For patients with limited recovery time, the Melasma Pico Series is a better option.
When can I see a difference?
Results can be seen at week 2, however best results are achieved at the 12 -14-week mark.
Can this be used on all skin types?
Cosmelan can be used on all skin types, including darker ethnic skin. For higher skin types, the mask is left on for a few hours longer. Our clinicians will guide you through the process.

*For superior results, the pre-Cosmelan peel is advisable. This peel is conducted 2 weeks prior to the Peel. This acts as a primer, making your Cosmelan treatment more effective.

The Cosmelan Peel (& Dermamelan) remains as the fastest way to clear up melasma, requiring only one clinic visit. The downside is the long recovery time- upwards of 10 to 14 days.
The Pico Melasma Series provides effective pigment reduction with no recovery/downtime.
It is effective in 60% of melasma cases, whilst pico has an efficacy of over 80%.
As a guide, most patients will choose the Melasma Pico Series over the Cosmelan Series, due to the downtime & lower efficacy of the Cosmelan peel.

Attaining the best melasma removal results involves a personalized approach with advanced treatments, tailored skincare & consistent sun protection for a luminous and even-toned complexion.
How long will the results last?
Longevity of the results depends on your genetically determined pigment output. We recommend continued use of this skin care products for 3 months, followed by a maintenance phase that extends to 9 months.
Cosmelan® 2 can be used indefinitely with longer intervals between applications for maintenance of results, but the Cosmelan® 1 peel can be repeated as required.
